Alberto Torres Hernández
Alberto Torres Hernández is a Spanish-British figurative painter and draughtsman based in London. He holds an MA from Chelsea College of Arts (2014).
His practice – centred on oil painting and works on paper – explores identity, desire, and the body through a language poised between figuration and abstraction.
His current body of work, One Continuous Poem – Queering the Classics, reinterprets Titian’s Poesie cycle and Ovid’s Metamorphoses through a contemporary view, giving form to experiences of otherness, migration, and minority identity – the negotiation of belonging, and the impulse to hide within an “ideal” environment suspended between reality and dream. Figures emerge as if from haze or cloud, coalescing out of the pigment itself. The series was shown as a solo chapter exhibition at SQFT:SPACE Gallery, London (2025).
Torres Hernández’s work has been recognised with the British Institution Award at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2013) and selection for the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery (2013), and shortlisted for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize (selected by Chantal Joffe). He completed a residency at Palazzo Monti, Brescia (2018–19), and has exhibited internationally across the UK, Italy, Spain, and the USA, including exhibitions at the Royal Society of Arts and Christie’s, London (2026). His works are held in collections including the Soho House Group and Mana Museum, New Jersey.
